Snakes and Ladders is a famous game that people all around the world enjoy playing. Most people are familiar with the game, but few are aware of its origins. In reality, the game of Snakes and Ladders was invented by ancient Indians and had philosophical connotations as well as being played for pure entertainment.

Snakes and Ladders is based on an Ancient Indian Hindu game that was possibly played as early as the 100s BC, and was designed to highlight the good and terrible deeds of life, and was known as ‘Moksha Patamu’ or simila.

We came up with a lot of ideas while designing this game, but the one that stuck with us the most was the idea that you were in Purtagory, purifying your soul in one last attempt to access the pearly gates of Heaven. Indeed, the only way to end up in Purgatory is if you died in God’s grace yet still harbor resentment against your earlier crimes.

This story made the greatest sense when kept in mind the ancient theme of Snakes & Ladders, as older versions of the game contained the message that your virtues will hoist you up while your vices will pull you down.

This game was our main inspiration for the birth of Heaven and hell ! the making process and showcasing our product was really interesting. All of us loved recreating a better, more interactive game of snakes and ladders.
